[process] Elephant Mawake by Dean Taylor

1.

Dean Taylor : I’ve had this piece around a while, only now have i came around to drawing it ready for printing. I’ve kept the detail moderate in order to give me a nice clean print when it comes down to it.

Rich Cahill : Small question Dean – is that a pencil or a mechanical pencil?

Dean Taylorl : A mechanical one, 0.5mm lead.

2.

Dean Taylor : Im a firm believer in taping the paper to the block at this stage and ensuring it covers the whole block in order to keep the design from losing part of its image. Of course keep the design drawing side up. I ensure that all my lines are traced sufficiently so that I don’t have to go back and repeat missed parts.

3.

Dean Taylor : I typically use the finer tipped tools (V shaped tool) for the outlines and the U shaped tool to take out the larger surface areas, this also helps with definition of particular areas.

4.

Dean Taylor : I add paint to the mat using a knife and spread it equally along the surface with my brayer in order to create a reasonably even surface. I then go on and carefully and evenly dispense the paint onto the block.

John Powell : What roller are you using Dean?

Dean Taylorl : A 10cm rubber roller from the DJCAD Art shop.

5.

Dean Taylor : After some light proofing - Print! My favourite part. This print worked out very well.
